Վերսկսիլ, դադարեցնել, ձեռնամուխ ըլլալ: a beginning, an end and "all over again"

"To stop", "to resume", "to set about" are phrases in many languages. Here they are single words, but transparently built. The prefix վեր- means "again, anew". Սկսիլ (sgsil) (to begin) → վերսկսիլ (versgsil) (to resume); ստուգել (to check) → վերստուգել (versdukel) (to recheck); նայիլ (nayil) (to look) → վերանայել (to review). Careful: it also means "away": վերացնել (veratsnel) is "to remove", not "to redo". For example: “Բանակցութիւնները վերսկսան երկուշաբթի” (panagtsut'yunnerə versgsan yergushapt'i) — The…

How it works

"To stop", "to resume", "to set about" are phrases in many languages. Here they are single words, but transparently built. The prefix վեր- (ver) means "again, anew". Սկսիլ (sgsil) (to begin) → վերսկսիլ (versgsil) (to resume); ստուգել (to check) → վերստուգել (versdukel) (to recheck); նայիլ (nayil) (to look) → վեր (ver)անայել (to review). Careful: it also means "away": վերացնել (veratsnel) is "to remove", not "to redo".

"By itself" versus "someone does it". The two are kept apart regularly: դադրիլ (to come to a stop) — դադարեցնել (tataretsnel) (to stop something); աւարտիլ — աւարտել (avardel) (to end / to finish). The suffix -եցնել adds a doer, while -իլ and -ուիլ remove one.

Phrases instead of a verb. "To set about" is ձեռնամուխ ըլլալ (tserrnamukh əllal) (literally "to put a hand in"); "to get down to business" is գործի անցնիլ (kordzi antsnil); "to give up on" is ձեռք թափ տալ (tserrk' t'ap' dal). All three take the "to whom" form: գործին (kordzin) ձեռնամուխ ըլլալ (tserrnamukh əllal) (kordzin tserrnamukh əllal).

Negation. You glue չ onto the front of the verb: յանձնուեցաւ (gave in) → չյանձնուեցաւ (chhantsnuetsav) (did not give in); հասկցայ (hasgtsa) → չհասկցայ (chhasgtsay) (chhasgtsa).

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
