Մտածողութիւն, չափում, դիտարկում: a noun out of a verb

Many abstract words are nouns made from verbs, built with two predictable suffixes. -ում — the action as a process or a single act. Take the verb stem: չափել (chap'el) → չափում (chap'um) (a measurement); ստուգել → ստուգում (sdukum) (a check); ձախողիլ → ձախողում (tsakhoghum) (a failure). A word in -ում is always countable: "three measurements" works. For example: “Առաջին չափումը սխալ եղաւ” (arrachin chap'umə skhal yeghav) — The first measurement turned out wrong. A rule from the Western…

How it works

Many abstract words are nouns made from verbs, built with two predictable suffixes. -ում — the action as a process or a single act. Take the verb stem: չափել (chap'el) → չափում (chap'um) (a measurement); ստուգել (sdukel) → ստուգում (sdukum) (a check); ձախողիլ → ձախողում (tsakhoghum) (a failure). A word in -ում is always countable: "three measurements" works.

-ութիւն — a property, a state, an abstract idea. It is built from a participle or adjective, not the verb: մտածող (thinking) → մտածողութիւն (mdadzoghut'yun) (thinking, mindset); ճշգրիտ (precise) → ճշգրտութիւն (jshkrdut'yun) (precision). Such words are usually not counted.

In doubt, put a number before the word. If it works, you need -ում; if not, -ութիւն.

What happens to the root. It loses an inner vowel more often than you expect: միտք → մտքի (mdk'i); ճշգրիտ → ճշգրտութիւն (jshkrdut'yun). An unstressed ի (i) or ու (u) in the middle drops out once something is attached.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in a Western Armenian example sentence?

“Առաջին չափումը սխալ եղաւ” (arrachin chap'umə skhal yeghav) — The first measurement turned out wrong. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
