Կ'արտադրուի, ստուգուեցաւ, փաթեթաւորուած: the workshop speaks with no doer

Factory texts mostly say what was done to a thing, not who did it. That is not style but the nature of such a text: a single insert, -ու-, removes the doer. The suffix -ու- goes before the ending. How it works

Factory texts mostly say what was done to a thing, not who did it. That is not style but the nature of such a text: a single insert, -ու- (-u), removes the doer. The suffix -ու- goes before the ending. Արտադրել (ardatrel) (to manufacture) → արտադրուիլ (to be manufactured); ստուգել (sdukel) → ստուգուիլ. The dictionary form of such a verb ends in -իլ, like խօսիլ (khosil).

The doer is named with կողմէ, and usually not at all. Ապրանքը (abrank'ə) ստուգուեցաւ տեսուչին կողմէ — the goods were checked by the inspector. The normal factory phrase is shorter: ապրանքը (abrank'ə) ստուգուեցաւ, with no inspector.

The impersonal "they". Even more often you use a "they" verb with no named doer: ապրանքը (abrank'ə) բեռնառաքեցին (perrnarrak'etsin) (abrank'ə perrnarrak'etsin), literally "they shipped the goods". It is livelier and wins in speech.

The participle in -ուած gives the result. Փաթեթաւորուած (packed), ցանկապատուած (tsangabadvadz) (fenced off). It also works as an adjective: փաթեթաւորուած ապրանք (abrank). Careful: in some verbs -ու- means "to oneself": լուացուիլ — to wash oneself. Only the verb's meaning tells them apart.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in a Western Armenian example sentence?

“Ապրանքը (abrank'ə) հոս (hos) կ'արտադրուի” (abrank'ə hos g'ardatrui) — The goods are manufactured here. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
