After the word, not before: orqasida, yonida, qarshisida
English "behind", "by", "opposite" stand BEFORE the word; here they stand AFTER it and attach with tails. "Behind the house" is uyning orqasida: first whose (the house), then where (on its back). For example: “Dorixona bankning qarshi tomonida.” — The pharmacy is on the far side of the bank. A rule from the Uzbek course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
English "behind", "by", "opposite" stand BEFORE the word; here they stand AFTER it and attach with tails. "Behind the house" is uyning orqasida: first whose (the house), then where (on its back).
The tail -ning says "whose", and the place word works without it too: uy orqasida — just as correct, simply shorter. The place word itself takes the place suffix -da: orqasida, yonida, qarshisida.
Every place word is a body part or a side: orqa — the back, yon — the side, qarshi — the far side. Also old — the front and ich — the inside: "in the house" is uy ichida, literally "in the inside of the house".
The order is always the same: the word, then the place word, then -da. English "behind the shop" becomes doʻkonning orqasida — and it reads back to front, from the thing to the place.
Table
| postposition | literally | in plain words | example |

| yonida | at its side | next to | svetofor yonida |
| qarshisida | facing it | opposite | bankning qarshisida |
| oldida | before it | in front of | uyning oldida |
| ichida | in its inside | inside | uy ichida |
| ustida | on it | on top of | stol ustida |
| orasida | between them | between | gullar orasida |
By example

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
