  • Цю книжку мені подарували в дитинстві. Обкладинка давно потерлася, а перший розділ я знаю майже напамʼять. Сюжет простий: хлопчик тікає з дому й розуміє, що дім — це люди, а не будинок. Автор написав лише один роман і більше нічого. Іноді одного досить.

This book was given to me in childhood. The cover wore out long ago, and I know the first chapter almost by heart. The plot is simple: a boy runs away from home and understands that home is people, not a building. The author wrote only one novel and nothing else. Sometimes one is enough.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. When was the book given?

  2. What does the narrator know by heart?

  3. What does the hero understand?

  4. How many books did the author write?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Ukrainian?

B1. That means: everyday topics are behind you, you know about three thousand words, and an unknown word is more often guessed from the sentence than looked up.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
