Vidchyniaty, vidkryvaty, zamykaty: two opens and a lock
English runs everything through open; Ukrainian splits it between two verbs and adds a third for locking. Grabbing the wrong verb is the most audible slip in daily speech. For example: “Відчини вікно, душно” (Vidchyny vikno, dushno) — Open the window, it is stuffy. A rule from the Ukrainian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
English runs everything through open; Ukrainian splits it between two verbs and adds a third for locking. Grabbing the wrong verb is the most audible slip in daily speech.
Vidchyniaty / zachyniaty is for things on hinges: doors, windows, gates, shutters. Vidchyny vikno, zachyny dveri. The shop sign uses the same verb: vidchyneno, zachyneno.
Vidkryvaty / zakryvaty handles everything else: a book, eyes, a jar, an account, an exhibition, a secret. Vidkryi knyzhku, zakryi ochi, vidkryty rakhunok.
Zamykaty / vidmykaty is lock and key: zamkny dveri, vidimkny mashynu. The same root lives in vmykaty and vymykaty, switching on and off. The test is quick: hinges mean vidchyniaty, a lock means zamykaty, everything else means vidkryvaty.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
