How it works
English has "birthday", "day off", "holiday" — three different words. Thai almost always starts from wan, "day", and adds the occasion: wan koet — "birthday", literally "day of being born". The same way wan yut — "stop day", that is, a day off — and wan pi mai — "new year day" are assembled.
The order is one for everything: wan + the occasion, and no prepositions. Thai says "on New Year" or "on a birthday" with this word alone. wan pi mai mii fai prathap — "on New Year there are garlands". Exactly when is said separately: ton pi mai, wan koet mae.
The occasion can be a person too: wan mae — "Mother's Day", a national holiday of Thailand; wan pho — "Father's Day". Not "the holiday of mothers" but her very day — this is how Thai keeps its calendar.
