เข้า ไป or เข้า มา: where to and from where, hidden in the verb
English hangs direction on words like "in" and "out". Thai puts it into a verb pair: the motion takes pai, "away from me", or ma, "toward me". For example: “เข้า มา ใน ห้อง ได้ แล้ว” — You may come into the room (toward me). A rule from the Thai course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
English hangs direction on words like "in" and "out". Thai puts it into a verb pair: the motion takes pai, "away from me", or ma, "toward me".
Four verbs of the path give eight directions. khao pai — go in there; khao ma — come in here. ok pai — go out there; ok ma — come out here. The same goes for khuen pai and khuen ma, long pai and long ma.
The point of reference is always the speaker. Someone calls up the stairs long ma kin khao — "come down here and eat". The speaker is downstairs with the food; you are upstairs.
The check is simple. Toward the speaker — take ma. Away from the speaker — take pai.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in a Thai example sentence?
