The answer goes through pen, "to be someone": phom pen chang mai — "I am a carpenter". A more formal way: tham ngaan pen nak banchi — "I work as an accountant".
Many job words start with a small word for a person. nak is the trained expert (nak banchi). chang is the skilled hand (chang mai). khon is simply a person (khon suan, a gardener).
The verb never changes: thoe pen mo is "she is a doctor", with the same pen as "I am".
