ปวด and เป็น: where it hurts and what you have
Thai speaks of illness with two short verbs. ปวด means "to hurt" and goes with a part of the body: glue it to the place and you have the complaint. puat hua — my head hurts; puat thong — my stomach hurts; puat fan — my tooth hurts. For example: “เมื่อ วาน ปวด หัว มาก” — Yesterday my head hurt badly. A rule from the Thai course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Thai speaks of illness with two short verbs. ปวด (пуат) means "to hurt" and goes with a part of the body: glue it to the place and you have the complaint. puat hua — my head hurts; puat thong — my stomach hurts; puat fan — my tooth hurts.
The second verb, เป็น (пен), "to be", names the illness itself. pen khai — have a temperature; pen khai wat — have a cold. The illness works like a property: a person "is a cold".
The split is simple. Pain in one place goes through puat; what the whole body has goes through pen. The doctor asks puat thi nai — where does it hurt? You answer with the same two-word pattern.
To say it hurts a lot, add mak: puat mak.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
