Thai builds most words for people from the deed. Three syllables turn an action into a person. The most everyday one is คน, a human: khon khai — a selling person, a seller. How it works
Thai builds most words for people from the deed. Three syllables turn an action into a person. The most everyday one is คน (кхон), a human: khon khai — a selling person, a seller.
The second is นัก (нак), a master of a craft, mostly in learning and art. nak rian — a pupil; nak suksa — a student; nak sadaeng — an actor.
The third is ผู้ (пхуу), "one who", the bookish and polite one: phuu chai — a user; phuu samak — a candidate. For bosses there is นาย (най), master: nai jang — an employer, literally "master-hirer".
A rule for choosing: handiwork takes khon, learning and the stage take nak, papers and applications take phuu. The syllable always comes first, the deed behind it.
