How it works
English says 'I am afraid'. Tamil says 'to me there is fear'. A feeling here is not an action but a state belonging to somebody. The person stands as 'to me', in -க்கு: எனக்கு பயமா இருக்கு (eṉakku bayamā irukku).
The turn has three pieces: who (எனக்கு (eṉakku), உங்களுக்கு (uṅgaḷukku)), the feeling with the ending -ஆ (வெக்கமா (vekkamā), கவலையா (kavalaiyā)), and the link இருக்கு (irukku). Change the middle piece and the whole row follows.
The second way is a verb in -படுறேன், 'I undergo it': பயம் (bayam) gives பயப்படுறேன் (bayappaḍuṟēṉ). The difference is fine but you can hear it. எனக்கு வெக்கமா இருக்கு (eṉakku vekkamā irukku) is how I feel now; நான் வெக்கப்படுறேன் (nāṉ vekkappaḍuṟēṉ) is how I usually am.
And here is the trap: what causes the feeling often becomes the main word. இந்த சத்தம் எனக்கு எரிச்சலூட்டுது (inda sattam eṉakku ericcalūṭṭudu) — 'this noise annoys me'.
