How much exactly: எல்லாம், சில, நிறைய, ஒவ்வொரு

Quantity is shown by a separate word in front, and the noun itself stays put. நிறைய மாணவர் is 'many students', with மாணவர் in the same shape as 'student'. The ending -கள் after such a word is extra. For example: “இந்த வகுப்பில நிறைய மாணவர் இருக்கிறாங்க” — There are many pupils in this class. A rule from the Tamil course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Quantity is shown by a separate word in front, and the noun itself stays put. நிறைய மாணவர் (niṟaiya māṇavar) is 'many students', with மாணவர் (māṇavar) in the same shape as 'student'. The ending -கள் after such a word is extra.

The row learns best in pairs. நிறைய (niṟaiya) 'many' and கொஞ்சம் (koñcam) 'a little', beside them சில (sila) 'some' and சிறிது 'a bit'. கொஞ்சம் is for what you do not count, சில for what you can.

'All' and 'every' get mixed up most often. எல்லாம் (ellām) is everything in one heap: எல்லா பாடமும் கடினம் 'all the subjects are hard'. ஒவ்வொரு (ovvoru) is each one apart: ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் படிக்கிறேன் (ovvoru nāḷum paḍikkiṟēṉ) 'I study every day'.

The tail -உம் (--um) is obligatory with both of them, right on the noun. And 'roughly' is சுமார் (sumār) before the number: சுமார் ஐம்பது பேர் (sumār aimbadu pēr).

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Frequently asked

How much exactly: how does it work in Tamil?

What does it look like in an example sentence Tamil?

“இந்த வகுப்பில நிறைய மாணவர் இருக்கிறாங்க” (inda vaguppila niṟaiya māṇavar irukkiṟāṅga) — There are many pupils in this class. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
