How it works
The main split in Tamil grammar is not where you would look for it. Gender plays no part. The language sorts everything into rational — people and gods — and irrational — all the rest. Things, plants, weather, even animals: a dog here is as much an object as a table.
The split rules three things. The verb first: with a rational doer it ends in -ஆர் or -இனம் (-iṉam), with an irrational one in -உது. டாக்டர் (ḍākṭar) இங்கே (iṅgē) இருக்கார் (ḍākṭar iṅgē irukkār), மேசை (mēsai) இங்கே (iṅgē) இருக்கு (irukku) (mēsai iṅgē irukku).
The pronoun second: about a person அவர் (avar), about a thing அது (adu). The plural third: after a numeral a thing drops it. ரெண்டு (reṇḍu) நாற்காலி (nāṟkāli) இருக்கு (irukku) (reṇḍu nāṟkāli irukku) — two chairs, no -கள், verb in the singular.
So when -உது closes the verb, look for a thing as the doer. And இருக்கு (irukku) about a person sounds not merely wrong but rude.
