He didn't come, I won't come, don't go: four negations
There is no word 'not' standing before the verb. The negative is a form of its own for each case, chosen by what you deny. All four share one thing: the negative comes at the end. For example: “அவர் இன்னிக்கு வேலைக்கு வரேல்லை” — He did not come to work today. A rule from the Tamil course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
There is no word 'not' standing before the verb. The negative is a form of its own for each case, chosen by what you deny. All four share one thing: the negative comes at the end.
இல்லை (in speech இல்ல (illai)) denies a noun and denies being. அவர் டாக்டர் இல்லை (avar ḍākṭar illai) 'he is not a doctor', எனக்கு நேரம் இல்லை (eṉakku nēram illai) 'I have no time'. This form never changes at all.
Past and present are denied by the ending -ஏல்ல: நான் போகேல்ல (nāṉ pōgēlla) covers 'I did not go' and 'I do not go'. The tense rests on நேற்று (nēṟṟu) and இன்னிக்கு (iṉṉikku). The future takes a separate word: stem in -அ plus மாட்டன் (māṭṭaṉ).
A ban is the fourth form, -ஆதே / -ஆதீங்க: போகாதே, போகாதீங்க (pōgādīṅga). Reaching for one single 'not' gives nonsense: இல்லை denies neither the future nor a command.
Table
| What you deny | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a noun, being | இல்லை | அவர் டாக்டர் இல்லை |
| past and present | -ஏல்ல | நான் போகேல்ல |
| the future | மாட்டன் | நான் போக மாட்டன் |
| a command | -ஆதீங்க | போகாதீங்க |
By example
- அவர் இன்னிக்கு வேலைக்கு வரேல்லைavar iṉṉikku vēlaikku varēllaiHe did not come to work today
- நான் நாளைக்கு கடைக்கு போக மாட்டன்nāṉ nāḷaikku kaḍaikku pōga māṭṭaṉTomorrow I will not go to the shop
- இப்ப அங்கே போகாதீங்கippa aṅgē pōgādīṅgaDo not go there now
How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in an example sentence Tamil?
“அவர் இன்னிக்கு வேலைக்கு வரேல்லை” (avar iṉṉikku vēlaikku varēllai) — He did not come to work today. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
