How it works

Aloud it comes out short: போறன் (pōṟaṉ) 'I go', நீங்கள் (nīṅgaḷ) 'you', தண்ணி (taṇṇi) 'water'. On a signboard and in a paper the same words run longer: போகிறன், நீங்கள் (nīṅgaḷ), தண்ணீர்.
