Vreme, seme, dete: the neuter that grows a syllable
Some neuter words grow an extra syllable in every shape but the plain one. These are not a handful of exceptions but a whole class, and it holds some of the commonest words. How it works
Some neuter words grow an extra syllable in every shape but the plain one. These are not a handful of exceptions but a whole class, and it holds some of the commonest words.
The -n- group: vreme, ime, seme, rame. Short in the plain form, longer everywhere after it: vremena, imena, semena. Hence nema vremena — there is no time.
The -t- group is about young creatures: dete, jagnje, tele, mače. The of-form is deteta, jagnjeta, mačeta. The meat words come off the same stem: jagnjetina, teletina.
The young ones take a plural of their own in -ad: jagnjad, pilad, unučad, and such a word counts as feminine singular. And dete has a different plural altogether — deca, also singular: deca je došla.
