Da li, li, zar: the question, the echo and the softeners
Asking again is harder than asking: a bare question with no particle sounds like an interrogation. There are four ways to ask for a yes or a no, and they differ in tone. For example: “Да ли долазиш или си се предомислио?” — Are you coming, or have you changed your mind?. A rule from the Serbian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Asking again is harder than asking: a bare question with no particle sounds like an interrogation. There are four ways to ask for a yes or a no, and they differ in tone.
Da li plus the verb is the most neutral: Da li dolaziš? The verb plus li is shorter and more bookish: Dolaziš li? That li sits right after the first stressed word and cannot be moved.
Je li at the front is the spoken version of the same: Je li to daleko? And intonation alone: Dolaziš? Among friends that is normal; with a stranger it sounds careless.
Zar stands apart as the particle of disbelief. Zar nisi znao? — you really did not know? It carries surprise or reproach, so a calm question has no room for it.
Table
| the form | example | in English | the tone |
|---|---|---|---|
| da li + verb | da li dolaziš? | are you coming? | neutral, always safe |
| verb + li | dolaziš li? | coming, are you? | shorter, more bookish |
| je li + phrase | je li to daleko? | is it far? | spoken |
| bare intonation | dolaziš? | coming? | among your own |
| zar | zar nisi znao? | you mean you did not know? | disbelief, a jab |
| zar ne? | lepo je, zar ne? | it is lovely, right? | fishing for agreement |
| valjda | valjda će stići | hopefully he will make it | no confidence |
| molim? | molim? | sorry, what? | a polite echo |

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in an example sentence Serbian?
“Да ли долазиш или си се предомислио?” (Da li dolaziš ili si se predomislio?) — Are you coming, or have you changed your mind?. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
