How it works
Serbian prefixes work like English phrasal verbs: a small piece shades or flips the verb. Half of them match what you expect, and half drift quietly away.
The first job is bringing the action to an end: lepiti → zalepiti, meriti → izmeriti, soliti → posoliti, mešati → promešati.
The second is adding a shade. Pre- means beyond measure: preplatiti, presoliti. Do- finishes the remainder: dodati, doplatiti. Od- reverses the action: odšrafiti, odlepiti.
The third job is the one nobody warns you about. Sometimes a prefix builds a wholly different word: platiti is to pay, but pretplatiti se is to take out a subscription. Such pairs have to be known by face.
