පුළුවන් (puḷuvan) is skill and possibility: මට (maṭa) ගිටාර් (giṭār) ගහන්න (gahanna) පුළුවන් (puḷuvan) (maṭa giṭār gahanna puḷuvan) — "I can play the guitar". The verb in front of it stands in -න්න. The negative is බැහැ (bæhæ), or බෑ (bǣ) in quick speech.
දන්නවා (dannavā) is knowledge: මට (maṭa) සිංහල (siṁhala) දන්නවා (dannavā) ("I know Sinhala"), මම දන්නේ නෑ (mama dannē nǣ) ("I don't know"). The difference is between knowing a language and being able to speak it.
A capacity is held like property, with තියෙනවා (tiyenavā): එයාට සංගීතයට දක්ෂතාවක් (dakṣatāvak) තියෙනවා (tiyenavā) (eyāṭa saṁgītayaṭa dakṣatāvak tiyenavā) — "he has a talent for music". The rule behind all of it: given to you, මට (maṭa); done by you, මම (mama).
