English "can" carries skill and chance in one word. Sinhala keeps them apart, and it usually puts the person into the මට (maṭa) shape rather than මම (mama).
පුළුවන් (puḷuvan) is skill and possibility: මට ගිටාර් ගහන්න පුළුවන් (maṭa giṭār gahanna puḷuvan) — "I can play the guitar". The verb in front of it stands in -න්න. The negative is බැහැ (bæhæ), or බෑ (bǣ) in quick speech.
දන්නවා (dannavā) is knowledge: මට සිංහල දන්නවා ("I know Sinhala"), මම දන්නේ නෑ ("I don't know"). The difference is between knowing a language and being able to speak it.
A capacity is held like property, with තියෙනවා (tiyenavā): එයාට සංගීතයට දක්ෂතාවක් තියෙනවා (eyāṭa saṁgītayaṭa dakṣatāvak tiyenavā) — "he has a talent for music". The rule behind all of it: given to you, මට; done by you, මම.
