As much and more: තරම්, වඩා
To say "not as X as", put තරම් (taram) after the model — most often heard in a negative: මං තරම් (taram) උස (usa) නෑ — "not as tall as I am". For example: “මේ ගෙදර (gedara) අර (ara) ගෙදරට (gedaraṭa) වඩා (vaḍā) ලොකුයි” (lokuyi) — This house is bigger than that one. A rule from the Sinhala course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
To say "not as X as", put තරම් (taram) after the model — most often heard in a negative: මං තරම් (taram) උස (usa) නෑ (maṁ taram usa nǣ) — "not as tall as I am".
To say "more than", put වඩා (vaḍā), and give the thing compared against the tail -ට (-ṭa). මේ ගෙදර (gedara) අර (ara) ගෙදරට (gedaraṭa) වඩා (vaḍā) ලොකුයි (lokuyi) (mē gedara ara gedaraṭa vaḍā lokuyi) is "this house is bigger than that one".
And if there is no difference at all, say දෙකම (dekama) එකයි (ekayi) (dekama ekayi) — "both are the same".
Table
| Linker | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| … තරම් (taram) | as much as | මං තරම් (taram) උස (usa) නෑ — not as tall as I am |
| …ට වඩා (vaḍā) | than | ඒකට (ēkaṭa) වඩා ලාභයි (vaḍā lābhayi) — cheaper than that |
| දෙකම (dekama) එකයි (ekayi) | both are the same | ගාණ (gāṇa) දෙකම (dekama) එකයි (ekayi) — the price is the same for both |
By example
- මේ කුලිය මං හිතපු තරම් වැඩි නෑmē kuliya maṁ hitapu taram væḍi nǣThis rent is not as high as I thought
How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
Frequently asked
As much and more: how does it work in Sinhala?
To say "not as X as", put තරම් (taram) after the model — most often heard in a negative: මං තරම් (taram) උස (usa) නෑ — "not as tall as I am".
What does it look like in a Sinhala example sentence?
“මේ ගෙදර (gedara) අර (ara) ගෙදරට (gedaraṭa) වඩා (vaḍā) ලොකුයි” (lokuyi) (mē gedara ara gedaraṭa vaḍā lokuyi) — This house is bigger than that one. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
