  Pieszy is "a pedestrian", from the on-foot word. Przejście is literally "a crossing-through" — and across the road one crosses exactly on it.

  The same word as the bottle cork and the fuse: a jam is a "cork" stuck in the road. Several languages built the image the same way.

  The Anglicism is spotted at first glance. The verb is parkować, and the spaces are marked with a single letter: P.

  A Latin word with Polish stress in the middle. The national one in Warsaw is called exactly Stadion Narodowy.

  From the cross-word: an intersection is where roads cross themselves — built as the English one. The roundabout is the round-word, already familiar.

  Literally a "walking place": the thing one walks on. A trap: the same word is the carpet runner at home. Driving on it is forbidden.

  A Latinism, as in English — but the Polish avenue is a wide street: the Jerusalem Avenues in Warsaw. A row of trees along a road is also this word.

  Literally "jostling", from the crush-word. The crowded sense is conveyed in one word: the centre is crowded.

  From the seat-word — throne: the capital is the "throne city", built like the English one. A trap: the table-word is the dinner table; this one is the city.

  public transport

  Literally "city communication": the communication-word means connection and transit, and the city-adjective is from the familiar city. The transport-word a Pole leaves to trucks.

  kindergarten, nursery school

  Literally "before-school": the place before school, built like the English pre-school. The teacher is "the lady in the kindergarten" — and in the papers, the upbringing-word.

  playground

  Literally "a square of play": the square you know, and the play from the familiar toy. The swing and the sandbox have their own words.

  fountain

  An Italian Latinism, spotted at once. Children throw coins into the fountain for luck.
• cmentarz

  cemetery, graveyard

  A Greek Latinism — the same root as the cemetery-words of half of Europe. The grave is its own word; on the first of November all of Poland walks the cemetery with candles.

  fire truck, fire engine

  The cart-word in general — an old word; the fire-adjective from the familiar firefighter. The two words are sewn into one, as in English.
• kwartał

  quarter (of a year)

  The same word as a quarter of the year, three months. City blocks are called kwartały too.

  small park

  Said almost like the English word, one sound off. A park is big; a skwer is the patch of green between houses.
• wieża

  tower

  A relative of wieżowiec, the high-rise: the same root, one storey higher each time. A clock tower is wieża zegarowa — both words you know.
• przedmieście

  suburb

  Literally "before-city": przed is "before", miasto is "city". A soft ć at the end; mieszkam na przedmieściu — "I live in the suburbs".

  housing estate

  From osiedlić się, "to settle": the place where people settled. A residential block cluster in the city is also osiedle — that is the commonest sense.

  passer-by

  From przechodzić, "to walk past": a passer-by is the one who keeps going. Declines like the odd ones: przechodnia.

  pedestrian

  A pedestrian is "one who goes on foot" — an adjective turned noun, the way "the wounded" is. On the signs: przejście dla pieszych.

  German in origin, like so much of city furniture. Szyld nad sklepem — the sign over the shop.

  The same word as basket: the household one, the laundry one, the basketball hoop. The street bin is kosz na śmieci — and śmieci you know.

  Latarnia is a lamp in general; the full form is latarnia uliczna. The sea-going latarnia morska is already a lighthouse.
• trawnik

  lawn

  From the familiar trawa, "grass": the trimmed grass by the house is trawnik. One does not walk on it — hence the signs by every flowerbed.
• rabata

  flower bed

  Grządka is taken by the vegetable bed; the flower strip along the path is rabata. A gardening word, feminine.
• ganek

  porch

  A roofed platform before the door, often with a little bench — the invariable part of a Polish house. It stands with the preposition na: na ganku — "on the porch".

  step (stair)

  Stopień is taken by the degree on a scale; the stair step is schodek, the diminutive of the familiar schody. A fleeting e: schodka.
• numer domu

  house number

  No preposition, the way addresses work everywhere: numer domu. In the address it follows the street — Miodowa 12 — and it is always a number.
• nazwa ulicy

  street name

  Nazwa is "name" for things, from the same root as nazywać się, "to be called". The name of what — ulicy, the of-form, with no preposition: nazwa ulicy, exactly as on every plate.
• słup

  pole, post

  A post in general: the power one is słup energetyczny, the one papered with ads is słup ogłoszeń. "Of the post" is słupa.
• starówka

  old town

  From stary plus -ówka: this is what Poles call the old quarter with its market square and cobblestones. The full stare miasto is also correct, but in speech starówka suffices.
• budynek mieszkalny

  residential building

  Budynek is a building of any kind; the residential one is budynek mieszkalny, from the familiar mieszkanie. The high-rise a Pole calls simply blok.
• cisza

  silence

  The noun behind the phrase przerwać ciszę, "to break the silence". Cisza nocna — the quiet hours from eleven on — is taken seriously in Poland.
• budynek

  building

  Masculine, and "in the building" is w budynku; dom is a home, budynek any built structure from school to station. Same root as budować, "to build".
• sala

  hall

  Feminine; a hall as a room for people: the school one is sala lekcyjna, the gym is sala gimnastyczna. A room in a flat is never sala — that is the familiar pokój.

Street, square, pharmacy, bank. An address is built out of these, and an address is something you have to both say and understand.

A list is read in a minute and forgotten in a day. What works: hide the translation, try to recall, get it wrong — and come back to the same words tomorrow.
