Ğilymi zhañalyq, ölşem nätijesi, tüpki oi: a term of two words
Where English has one word, Kazakh often has a pair. A discovery is ğilymi zhañalyq; a measurement is ölşem nätijesi. The whole bookish layer of the language is built this way. How it works
Where English has one word, Kazakh often has a pair. A discovery is ğilymi zhañalyq; a measurement is ölşem nätijesi. The whole bookish layer of the language is built this way.
The first way is to say X of something. The first word stands bare and the second takes -y or -sy. Ölşem nätijesi is the result of a measurement; oi zhelisi is the thread of a thought.
The second way is a modifier with no tail at all. It simply stands in front: ğilymi zhañalyq, zhañsaq pikir, tüpki oi. Only the last word of the pair takes tails: zhañsaq pikirge qarsy.
The trap: the single word exists, but it is busy elsewhere. Zhañalyq alone is news on television; ölşem alone is a clothing size.
