ჩემი დედა and დედაჩემი: possession two ways

Six words ending in -ი cover 'my' and 'your'. ჩემი (my), შენი (your), მისი (his, her), ჩვენი (our), თქვენი (your), მათი (their). They stand in front and never change for number: ჩემი წიგნი and ჩემი წიგნები keep the same ჩემი. For example: “დედაჩემი ვახშამს ამზადებს” — My mom is cooking dinner. A rule from the Georgian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Six words ending in -ი cover 'my' and 'your'. ჩემი (my), შენი (your), მისი (his, her), ჩვენი (our), თქვენი (your), მათი (their). They stand in front and never change for number: ჩემი წიგნი (chemi tsigni) and ჩემი წიგნები (chemi tsignebi) keep the same ჩემი.

Worth remembering on its own: მისი does not mark sex — it is both 'his' and 'her'.

The main thing is this. With close family Georgian fuses the word onto the name and puts it after. Not 'ჩემი დედა (chemi deda)' but დედაჩემი (dedachemi), not 'შენი მამა (sheni mama)' but მამაშენი. Same with ძმაჩემი (dzmachemi), დაჩემი (dachemi), ბებიაჩემი.

The separate version is not wrong, but it sounds emphatic — 'my mother, specifically'. Neutral speech fuses them.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
