Valencian pronunciation

In Valencian these are what take effort: the verb endings in -e and the markers of the standard that tell a Valencian apart. The easy part: vowels sound the same wherever they stand and final -r is pronounced: you can read aloud from day one. Here are the sounds and words people stumble on most often — every one of them playable.

How to work on pronunciation on your own

Listening and repeating aloud is not a platitude — it is the only technique available without a teacher. Saying words out loud gives a small but measured gain over silent reading, and it is also the only way to notice that your mouth is not shaping a sound your ear already tells apart.

  • A word said out loud is remembered slightly better than one read in silence. The difference is small.checked little

Second: listen to whole words, not isolated sounds. A sound never occurs in speech on its own — it always stands next to its neighbours and changes with them.

There is no sound-by-sound drill here (“soften your aspiration”) and there will not be: no tool exists yet that can tell an accent from a mistake, and advice that people will follow but that was made up does harm.

Frequently asked

Is Valencian pronunciation hard?

The verb endings in -e and the markers of the standard that tell a Valencian apart. At the same time, vowels sound the same wherever they stand and final -r is pronounced: you can read aloud from day one.

Can you train pronunciation without a teacher?

To be understood — yes. Listen to how a word sounds and repeat it aloud. As for speaking well enough to pass for a local: almost nobody manages that, and there is no need. The goal is to be understood, not to hide that you are a visitor.

Can I hear how this sounds?

Yes — every word on this page plays: tap the speaker next to it. The sound works on any phone, and nothing needs to be installed.
