Aholi, xalq, koʻpchilik: words about many in the singular
Words about multitudes of people often stand in the singular: aholi — the population, xalq — the people, jamiyat — society, koʻpchilik — the majority. No plural is asked of them. For example: “Shahar aholisi har yili koʻpaymoqda.” — The city's population grows every year. A rule from the Uzbek course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Words about multitudes of people often stand in the singular: aholi — the population, xalq — the people, jamiyat — society, koʻpchilik — the majority. No plural is asked of them.
The verb beside them is singular: Aholi koʻpaydi — "the population grew", Koʻpchilik ha deydi — "the majority says yes". English "the majority say" would be a mistake here.
Separate people take -lar: doʻstlar — friends, bolalar — children. After a number -lar is not used: ikki doʻst — "two friends".
The difference shows on the question "how many". "Aholi koʻp" — about everyone at once. "Yashovchilar koʻp" — about those who live there, one by one.
Table
| word | meaning | example | in plain words |

| koʻpchilik | the majority | Koʻpchilik ha deydi | the majority says yes |

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
