  • ہمارے علاقے میں تقریباً پانچ سو باشندے رہتے ہیں۔ پچھلے سال ہم نے پرانے بچوں کے پارک کی مرمت کا فیصلہ کیا۔ دو مہینے چندہ جمع کرایا گیا، حکومت نے بھی مدد کی۔ رضاکار باری باری کام کرتے رہے۔ جو پہلے ہاتھ بھی نہیں ملاتے تھے، وہ اب دوست ہیں۔

About five hundred residents live in our district. Last year we decided to repair the old playground. For two months we collected contributions; the authority helped too. The volunteers worked in turns. Those who would not even lend a hand before are now friends.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. What did the residents decide to renew?

  2. How long did they collect money?

  3. How did the volunteers work?

  4. What changed between the neighbours?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Urdu?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
