Text

pehli dafa karkhane main aya to pehle hidayat milai. har nae werkar ko yunifarm aur helmet dia dzhata hai. mera kam ye tha ke har produkt ko miyar ke mutabiq dehhun. dzhis perze main kharabi ho, ise alag rekhkhta aur nambar likhta. dopeher main karkhane ki mashin rik gai aur kam do ghante rik gaya.
For the first time I came to the factory — first I went through the briefing. Every new worker is issued a work uniform and a hard hat. My work was to see whether each item conforms to the standard. If there was a defect in a part, I set it apart and wrote down the number. At noon the factory’s machine tool stood, and the work was stopped for two hours.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. What did the worker get on the first day?

  2. What was his work?

  3. What did he do with a defective part?

  4. How long did the work stand at noon?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Urdu?

A2. That means: you know the letters and have a stock of everyday words — about two or three hundred.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
