English

Ye and woh: this and that

There are two demonstratives: ye — this, the one near, and woh — that, the one further. The same woh serves as he, she and that — which exactly, the conversation says. For example: “یہ فون میرا ہے، وہ آپ کا ہے” — This phone is mine, and that one is yours. A rule from the Urdu course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

There are two demonstratives: ye — this, the one near, and woh — that, the one further. The same woh serves as he, she and that — which exactly, the conversation says.

The demonstrative stands BEFORE the word — a rarity in Urdu, where definitions usually follow: ye phone — this phone, woh phone — that phone.

The plural uses the same words: ye kitaabein — these books, woh kitaabein — those books. The noun itself does not move.

The near-far contrast you have heard in the place words: yahaan — here, wahaan — there. The demonstratives live on the same axis.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Frequently asked

Ye and woh: how does it work in Urdu?

There are two demonstratives: ye — this, the one near, and woh — that, the one further. The same woh serves as he, she and that — which exactly, the conversation says.

What does it look like in a Urdu example sentence?

“یہ فون میرا ہے، وہ آپ کا ہے” (ye fon mera hai, wo ap ka hai) — This phone is mine, and that one is yours. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
