English

Someone, nothing and the obligatory nahin

Koi — someone, anyone; kuchh — something, anything. Neither is negative by itself: koi aaya tha — someone came. To negate, nahin is obligatory: koi nahin aaya — nobody came. A negative without nahin is not a sentence. For example: “کوئی آیا تھا۔” — Someone came by. A rule from the Urdu course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Koi — someone, anyone; kuchh — something, anything. Neither is negative by itself: koi aaya tha — someone came. To negate, nahin is obligatory: koi nahin aaya — nobody came. A negative without nahin is not a sentence.

Mez par kuchh nahin hai — there is nothing on the table: kuchh plus nahin makes nothing. Un mein se koi nahin aaya — none of them came: the part-tail mein se puts the circle around the none.

Koi bhi and kuchh bhi — any, anything at all. Take the same nahin when negated: koi bhi masla nahin. No problem at all. The bhi promises openness; the nahin closes it.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
