The question without a question word

A yes-no question is built by kya at the head: kya tum mujhe jaante ho? — do you know me? Nothing else moves: the phrase below kya is an ordinary sentence, verb last. For example: “کیا تم مجھے جانتے ہو؟” — Do you know me? A rule from the Urdu course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

A yes-no question is built by kya at the head: kya tum mujhe jaante ho? — do you know me? Nothing else moves: the phrase below kya is an ordinary sentence, verb last.

A real question word takes the first place instead: kab aao ge, abhi ya kal? — when will you come, now or tomorrow? The two question builds cannot combine: either kya heads the phrase, or the question word does.

Two discourse words you will hear every day: yaani. That is — asking for a simpler wording. chunanche — therefore — carrying the conclusion. Neither is a question; both glue two phrases into one thought.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
