English

Where exactly: ใน, บน, หน้า and หลัง

Thai does not decline: the role of a word is made by the preposition in front of the noun. "In the room" is nai hong, "on the table" is bon to. The order is always the same: who → does what → where. For example: “ผม อยู่ ใน ห้อง” — I am in the room. A rule from the Thai course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Thai does not decline: the role of a word is made by the preposition in front of the noun. "In the room" is nai hong, "on the table" is bon to. The order is always the same: who → does what → where.

There are four main prepositions: ใน (наи) "in", บน (бон) "on", หน้า (наа) "in front of", หลัง (ланг) "behind". The last two are the same words as "face" and "back". Thai sees space with the body: the face in front, the back behind. That is why "next month" is literally "the month's face". "Last year" is built differently: pii thii laeo, "the year that has passed".

"From" and "from where" are made by จาก (джак) — the same word as in the question khun ma jaak nai, "where are you from?". There is no separate word "whither": the direction is said with the verb "go" and the question ไหน (най).

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
