For the rational the plural is obligatory: -கள் on the word and -ஆங்க on the verb. பிள்ளைகள் பாடசாலைக்கு போறாங்க (piḷḷaigaḷ pāḍasālaikku pōṟāṅga) — 'the children go to school'. People are counted with பேர் (pēr): ரெண்டு பேர் (reṇḍu pēr) 'two of them', எத்தனை பேர் (ettaṉai pēr)? 'how many?'.
For the irrational it is the other way round: after a numeral no plural at all. ரெண்டு பெட்டி இருக்கு (reṇḍu peṭṭi irukku) — 'there are two suitcases', no -கள், verb in the singular. The numeral has said the count already.
Things do take -கள் where they come one by one and uncounted: பொருட்கள் (poruṭkaḷ) 'goods', வாழ்த்துக்கள் (vāḻttukkaḷ) 'wishes'. The ban covers only a numeral with a thing.
