In Serbian these are what take effort: cases that do not match English prepositions, and “false friends” at every step. The easy part: spelled the way it sounds, loanwords you already know. Here are the sounds and words people stumble on most often — every one of them playable.

Words that are not read the way they look
продавац (prodavac) — vendor. The fleeting a survives only in this form: prodavac, but prodavca, prodavcu.
зрео (zreo) — ripe. Two syllables: zre-o. In the feminine the l returns: zrela.
узећу (uzeću) — I will take. One word, with the soft ć: u-ze-ću.
мање (manje) — less. nje is one soft sound: ma-nje.
тежак (težak) — heavy. Fleeting a: tezak, but teska, tesko — and the z-with-hachek devoices to sh at the end.
кухиња (kuhinja) — kitchen. A soft nja at the end: ku-hi-nja, not "kuhinia".
смеће (smeće) — trash. A soft ć in the middle: sme-će.
чишћење (čišćenje) — cleaning. Šć is a soft "sh-ch" blend and nje a soft "nye": či-šće-nje.
посуђе (posuđe) — dishes. đ is a soft "dj": po-su-đe.
леђа (leđa) — back. The d-with-stroke is a soft "dj": le-đa.
How to work on pronunciation on your own
Listening and repeating aloud is not a platitude — it is the only technique available without a teacher. Saying words out loud gives a small but measured gain over silent reading, and it is also the only way to notice that your mouth is not shaping a sound your ear already tells apart.

Second: listen to whole words, not isolated sounds. A sound never occurs in speech on its own — it always stands next to its neighbours and changes with them.
