Zahtev je podnet: two passives and the language of institutions
The language of paperwork never says who acts: the request has been submitted, the visa issued, no smoking here. Serbian builds that two ways. For example: “Захтев је поднет прошле недеље и још се решава” — The request was submitted last week and is still being reviewed. How it works
The language of paperwork never says who acts: the request has been submitted, the visa issued, no smoking here. Serbian builds that two ways.
The first is se, alive and fine in speech. Take an ordinary verb and add se: Ulaz se plaća, Ovde se ne puši, Dokumenta se predaju na šalteru.
The second is biti plus a form in -n or -t: podneti → podnet, otkazati → otkazan, platiti → plaćen. Zahtev je podnet, Let je otkazan. That form agrees with the thing: viza je izdata, dokumenta su predata.
How to choose between them. Se states a rule and a routine: Viza se izdaje za dve nedelje. The -n form states the result right now: Viza je izdata juče.
