English

Hladno je, treba, ima: sentences with no subject

English needs a dummy subject: it is cold, there is no time. Serbian drops it, and each pattern has a shape of its own. For example: “Хладно ми је, затвори прозор” — I am cold, close the window. A rule from the Serbian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

English needs a dummy subject: it is cold, there is no time. Serbian drops it, and each pattern has a shape of its own.

First, a neuter word plus je: Hladno je, Vruće je. Without je the phrase hangs in the air. Who is cold comes in as a short word: Hladno mi je, Dosadno mi je.

Second, ima and nema for what is there and what is not. Both take the of-form after them: Ima mesta, Nema signala, Ima li utičnice? The negative is one word, and the past is imalo je or nije bilo.

Third, se standing alone: Ovde se ne puši — no smoking here, Kako se kaže… — how do you say. Nobody acts in such a sentence, and that is the whole point of it.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
