How it works
Slovenian kitchens talk in diminutives, and it is not baby talk. Half of them are separate objects, not pet forms: kumara is a cucumber, kumarica is a pickled gherkin.
There are three tails. -ek / -ček for masculine: zavoj → zavojček, prt → prtiček. -ica / -ka for feminine: kumara → kumarica, buča → bučka. -ce for neuter: okno → okence.
The meaning shifts in different directions. Simply smaller: lonec → lonček, a pot and a mug. A different object altogether: buča is a pumpkin, bučka a zucchini. Or a softer request: Daj mi kavico is gentler than Daj mi kavo.
The trap runs the other way too. Do not pile them up where a Slovene would not: vodica and kruhek sound odd in a café.
