Verb prefixes: pri-, od-, pre-, po- and where the meaning goes

One root gives half a dozen verbs, and only the prefix tells them apart. Viti is to wind; priviti — to screw on, odviti — to unscrew, zaviti — to wrap, razviti — to unwrap. For example: “Ročaj sem odvil, očistil in znova privil” — I unscrewed the handle, cleaned it and screwed it back on. A rule from the Slovenian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

One root gives half a dozen verbs, and only the prefix tells them apart. Viti is to wind; priviti — to screw on, odviti — to unscrew, zaviti — to wrap, razviti — to unwrap.

Pri- is approach and attachment: prilepiti, priviti, prinesti. Od- is the reverse action: odlepiti, odviti, odnesti. English 'on' and 'off' line up with them almost exactly.

Pre- is over the limit or all the way through: preplačati — to overpay, prebrati — to read through. And po- most often just finishes the verb off: pogreti, popraviti. No separate English word translates it.

A prefix almost always makes the verb a finished one: lepiti is to glue, prilepiti is to glue on. One trap: odpustiti is to fire somebody, oprostiti is to forgive.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

Verb prefixes: how does it work in Slovenian?

One root gives half a dozen verbs, and only the prefix tells them apart. Viti is to wind; priviti — to screw on, odviti — to unscrew, zaviti — to wrap, razviti — to unwrap.

What does it look like in an example sentence Slovenian?

“Ročaj sem odvil, očistil in znova privil” — I unscrewed the handle, cleaned it and screwed it back on. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
