An English word in Sinhala: when එක is needed

A borrowed word is a full member of the language, and it needs a tail before it can take an ending. Having none of its own, it borrows එක ("piece"): ජිම් එකට ("to the gym"), ජිම් එකේ ("at the gym"). For example: “ජිම් එකට යන්න කලින් වෝම් අප් එක කරන්න” — Before going to the gym, do the warm-up. A rule from the Sinhala course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

A borrowed word is a full member of the language, and it needs a tail before it can take an ending. Having none of its own, it borrows එක ("piece"): ජිම් එකට ("to the gym"), ජිම් එකේ ("at the gym").

Three sorts of word need no එක. People: ක්ලයන්ට් (klayanṭ), මෙකැනික් (mekænik) — living beings have their own tails. Sports and notions: ටෙනිස් (ṭenis), බොක්සිං (boksiṁ) — nobody counts those in pieces. Plurals: ඩම්බෙල් (ḍambel), උපකරණ (upakaraṇa).

A verb is made through කරනවා (karanavā), and the borrowed root never changes: කන්ෆර්ම් කරනවා (kanfarm karanavā), කන්ෆර්ම් කළා (kanfarm kaḷā), කන්ෆර්ම් කරන්න (kanfarm karanna). A quality stands in front of the word as it is: ලෝකල් කඩේ (lōkal kaḍē), ෆ්‍රෙෂ් මාළු.

The trap: pulling the word back towards its English sound. ෆැක්ටරි එක (fækṭari eka) is said the way the Sinhala letters write it, and that is how you should say it.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
