How it works
Half of the working words on the island are not single words. Where English keeps a term, Sinhala describes.
පාවිච්චි කරන්න පුළුවන් කාලය (pāvicci karanna puḷuvan kālaya) is "service life", word for word "the time you can use it". Shorter does not exist. අඩක් හදපු කැබැල්ල (aḍak hadapu kæbælla) is a blank, "a half-made piece".
The main device here is එක (eka): it turns a whole phrase into a name. වැඩ නැවතිලා තියෙන එක (væḍa nævatilā tiyena eka) is "downtime", word for word "that the work stands". The written language puts -ීම in that place: බාරගැනීම (bāragænīma) ("acceptance").
The trap: such words are wider than the English ones. මාරු ක්රමය (māru kramaya) is not only a tour of duty. It covers any long spell away from home: a ship, a plantation, a building site.
