Text

Keshe taudan tüsirgen suretimdi zhariyaladym, sosyn telefondy qaltama salyp qoidym. Keshke qaradym: zhüzden astam laik zhäne otyz pikir zhinalypty. Bir adam suretti basqa zherde tüsirilgen dep zhazdy, sonyñ saldarynan ūzaq dau bastaldy. Men aqparatty tekserdim: surettiñ küni men orny telefonda saqtalğan eken. Daulasqym kelmedi, sondyqtan derekközdi pikirge qosyp, äñgimeni ayaqtadym.
Yesterday I posted a photo taken in the mountains, and then put the phone in my pocket. In the evening I looked: more than a hundred likes and thirty comments had gathered. One person wrote that the photo was taken somewhere else, and a long argument began. I checked the information: the date and place of the shot, it turns out, are saved in the phone. I did not want to argue, so I added the source in a comment and ended the exchange.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. What did the narrator post on social media?

  2. What started the argument?

  3. How did the narrator verify the information?

  4. How did it all end?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Kazakh?

B1. That means: everyday topics are behind you, you know about three thousand words, and an unknown word is more often guessed from the sentence than looked up.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
