The dead end in our district
A text in Georgian at level B1. The translation sits next to it for checking, not for support: at this level the text is read whole, and an unknown word is usually guessed from the sentence. Our street ends in a dead end, and a stranger here always loses the way. On the map it looks as if there's an exit, but…
Text
შარშან ითქვა, რომ ღობეს გახსნიან და ქუჩას მთავარ გზასთან შეაერთებენ, მაგრამ სამუშაო გაიწელა და საქმე ჯერ არ დასრულებულა.chveni kucha chikhit mtavrdeba da utskho adamians ak qoveltvis gza ebneva. rukaze chans, titkos gasasvleli iqos, sinamdvileshi ki boloshi maghali ghobea. vints mokle gzit tsdilobs gavlas, ezos sighrmeshi khvdeba da ukan brundeba. gasul tsels mezoblebma ghobis kideze didi isari dakhates da kvemot mitseres: «gasasvleli ar aris». mas shemdeg avtomobilebi aghar shemodian, velosipedistebi ki maints shemogarenshi trialeben. sharshan itkva, rom ghobes gakhsnian da kuchas mtavar gzastan sheaerteben, magram samushao gaitsela da sakme jer ar dasrulebula. Our street ends in a dead end, and a stranger here always loses the way. On the map it looks as if there's an exit, but in reality there's a tall fence at the end. Whoever tries to pass straight through ends up deep in the yard and comes back. Last year the neighbors drew a big arrow on the edge of the fence and wrote underneath: no exit. Since then cars no longer drive in, while cyclists still circle the neighborhood. The year before, they said the fence would be opened and the street connected to the main road, but the work dragged on and the job isn't finished yet.

Frequently asked
What level do you need to read this text in Georgian?
B1. That means: everyday topics are behind you, you know about three thousand words, and an unknown word is more often guessed from the sentence than looked up.
How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?
First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
