Ամենալաւը and լաւագոյնը: two "best"

Three ways to say "the most". The first is the prefix ամենա-, glued to the front: amenat'arm hatsə — the freshest bread. If no noun follows, the article -ը moves onto the adjective itself: An amenalavn e — he is the best. For example: “Ան (an) դասարանի ամենալաւ աշակերտն է” — He is the best pupil in the class. A rule from the Western Armenian course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

Three ways to say "the most". The first is the prefix ամենա-, glued to the front: amenat'arm hatsə — the freshest bread. If no noun follows, the article -ը moves onto the adjective itself: An amenalavn e — he is the best.

The second is the ending -ագոյն, glued to the back: lavagoyn, partsragoyn. More bookish and narrower: in fixed expressions only it will do. Partsragoyn grt'ut'yun — higher education; lavagoyn əngers — my best friend, warmer than amenalav.

The third is comparison with the whole group at once, through -էն. Tasaranin mech poloren lavn e — better than everyone in the class. Where English says "the most", this says "of all" — the most frequent variant in live speech.

One trap: English "the very" intensifies precision, not degree: "in the very centre", "the very man". Ամենա- does not do that job: hents kentronin mech — right in the centre, hents ayt martə — the very man.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
