Western Armenian pronunciation
In Western Armenian these are what take effort: the Western reading flips the stops: letters that are voiced in Eastern Armenian are aspirated here, and the plain voiceless ones sound voiced. The easy part: stress almost always falls on the last syllable. Here are the sounds and words people stumble on most often.
Sounds people stumble on
Words that are not read the way they look
Բարեւ (parev) — hi. pa-REV, with the stress on the last syllable — where Armenian puts it almost always
Շնորհակալութիւն (shnorhagalut'yun) — thank you. a long word with a single stress, right at the end: shnor-ha-ga-loot-YOON
Ես (yes) — I. sounds exactly like the English word 'yes': the letter ե at the start of a word gives 'ye'
Մահճակալ (mahjagal) — bed. ma-ja-GAL, with the stress on the last syllable — the ճ sounds like j as in 'jam'
Օճառ (ojarr) — soap. o-JARR, with a full trill on the final ռ — let the r rattle a beat longer than an English r
Ծերունի (dzeruni) — old man. the opening ծ is a buzzing dz, like the ds in 'kids': dze-roo-NEE
Ճաշ (jash) — lunch. the ճ sounds like j as in 'jam': 'jash'
Ընթրիք (ənt'rik') — dinner. the opening ը is barely audible: the word comes out n'-TRIK', with a puff of air on the k at the end
Քիթ (k'it') — nose. k'-eet': the air escapes at both ends, the ք up front and the թ at the close each come with a puff
Կուրծք (gurdzk') — chest. goor-dzk': three final consonants in a row, with no vowel offering to help
How to work on pronunciation on your own
Listening and repeating aloud is not a platitude — it is the only technique available without a teacher. Saying words out loud gives a small but measured gain over silent reading, and it is also the only way to notice that your mouth is not shaping a sound your ear already tells apart.
- A word said out loud is remembered slightly better than one read in silence. The difference is small.checked littleFawcett, 2013, Acta Psychologica · g = 0.37. Part of the effect is not “out loud” winning but “in silence” losing.
Second: listen to whole words, not isolated sounds. A sound never occurs in speech on its own — it always stands next to its neighbours and changes with them.
Frequently asked
Is Western Armenian pronunciation hard?
The Western reading flips the stops: letters that are voiced in Eastern Armenian are aspirated here, and the plain voiceless ones sound voiced. At the same time, stress almost always falls on the last syllable.
Can you train pronunciation without a teacher?
To be understood — yes. Listen to how a word sounds and repeat it aloud. As for speaking well enough to pass for a local: almost nobody manages that, and there is no need. The goal is to be understood, not to hide that you are a visitor.
