How it works
A long word is almost always two simple ones sewn together with a single vowel. See the seam and you can read a word you have never met.
The joining -ա- sits between the roots: հանք + վայր (vayr) → հանքավայր (hank'avayr) a deposit, աղբ (aghb) + վայր (vayr) → աղբավայր (aghbavayr) a dump.
The first root often loses a piece. Սառույց (sarruyts) + դաշտ (dasht) gives not 'սառույցադաշտ' but սառցադաշտ (sarrtsadasht), a glacier; ածուխ (atsukh) + ծին gives ածխածին, carbon.
The trap: an unstressed vowel in the middle does not survive. So the short word inside a long one takes a moment to spot.
