A request: the future instead of a command

A short command form exists, but in live speech Israelis use the future: tavo — come, techake — wait, tasbir — explain. It sounds like the future and works as a request. For example: “תחכה לי כאן, בבקשה.” — Wait for me here, please. A rule from the Hebrew course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.

How it works

A short command form exists, but in live speech Israelis use the future: tavo — come, techake — wait, tasbir — explain. It sounds like the future and works as a request.

Politeness is added not by intonation but by bevakasha at the end: tasbiru shuv, bevakasha. The bare form is a command; with bevakasha it is a request. The difference is the same as between "explain" and "explain, please".

A prohibition is built with al plus the future: al tishbor — don't break it, al tigau — don't touch. English "don't touch" is built exactly the same way, only the ending differs.

How the rule settles in your head

A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.
