Text

  • همسایه ما مرد کم‌حرفی است. اول فکر می‌کردیم او مغرور است. زمستان که لوله آب ما خراب شد, او صبح زود آمد. لوله را درست کرد و هیچ چیزی نگفت. هیچ‌وقت از این کار پز نداد. حالا همه می‌گویند حرفش حرف است.
hamsâye mâ marde kâm-harfi ast. avval fekr mi-kardim u mâgrur ast. zemestân ke lulee âbe mâ khârâb shâd, u sâbhe zud âmed. lule râ dârâst kard â hich chizi nagâft. hich-vâgt az in kâr pâz nadâd. hâlâ hame mi-gân harfesh harf ast.
Our neighbor is a man of few words. At first we thought him vain. In winter, when our water pipe burst, he came early in the morning. He fixed the pipe and said nothing. He has never boasted of it. Now everyone says: his word is a word.

Comprehension questions

The questions are asked in Russian on purpose: we test your understanding of the text, not your ability to read the question.

  1. What did the neighbor seem like at first?

  2. What happened in winter?

  3. When did he come?

  4. What do they say of him now?

Frequently asked

What level do you need to read this text in Persian?

B1. That means: everyday topics are behind you, you know about three thousand words, and an unknown word is more often guessed from the sentence than looked up.

How to read a text in an unfamiliar language usefully?

First all the way through without peeking at the translation — just to catch the familiar words. Then with the translation. Then all the way through again: the second pass brings noticeably more, and that feeling matters more than any rule.
