Exactly where: μπροστά από, δίπλα σε, γύρω από
Plain σε only answers "roughly where". An exact place takes two words: an adverb plus από or σε. This is one of the tidiest corners of the language. For example: “Η στάση είναι απέναντι από την τράπεζα” — The stop is across from the bank. A rule from the Greek course: worked out on examples, not memorized as a wording.
How it works
Plain σε (se) only answers "roughly where". An exact place takes two words: an adverb plus από (apó) or σε. This is one of the tidiest corners of the language.
With από go μπροστά από (in front of), πίσω από (behind), πάνω από (above), κάτω από (under). Also απέναντι από (across from), γύρω από (around), μακριά από (far from).
With σε there are fewer: δίπλα σε (next to), κοντά σε (near), μέσα σε (inside), ανάμεσα σε (between). And σε fuses with the word for "the", as always: δίπλα στο φανάρι (dípla sto fanári), κοντά στη γέφυρα (kondá sti yéfira).
Which goes with which is easiest to keep by sense. από is for a point you measure from; σε is for a thing pressed up against another.

How the rule settles in your head
A rule is not memorized from an explanation. It is memorized from an attempt to use it and a mistake — that is why the app delivers it mixed in with words, not as a separate lesson: it resurfaces exactly where you forgot it.

What does it look like in an example sentence Greek?
“Η στάση είναι απέναντι από την τράπεζα” (i stási íne apénandi apó tin trápeza) — The stop is across from the bank. A rule is easier to test on sentences like this than to memorize as a wording: what surfaces in conversation is the sentence.
