Learning Catalan with Duolingo?
Duolingo teaches Catalan from Spanish only — you would be learning it through another language. It builds courses on CEFR without publishing a ceiling for the Catalan course; official certificates from the Generalitat and CPNL run from A1 to C2. Below: the level table, exams, and the switch to our course.
From Duolingo sections to a level and an exam
Duolingo’s courses follow CEFR ([their own explanation](https://blog.duolingo.com/duolingo-score/)), but they do not name a ceiling for the Catalan course: the course list opens inside the app, and there is no statement about its level. Your current level is the Duolingo Score; their Score ↔ CEFR table is the first column ([the table](https://blog.duolingo.com/duolingo-score/)).
| Duolingo Score | CEFR | Exam | Our level |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–29 | A1 | DGPL inicial (A1) | A0–A1 |
| 30–59 | A2 | DGPL bàsic (A2) | A1–A2 |
| 60–99 | B1 | DGPL elemental (B1) | B1 |

How to switch without starting from lesson 1
Already learning Catalan on Duolingo? Do not start from the alphabet: the app asks you in the course's own words and lands you exactly where you belong. The level row below opens Catalan right away — the language is already chosen.
- A check of where to start. Three questions per band, two failed bands — and the check is over. It asks in the words of the course itself, not by self-assessment.
- Words can come along. Export your list from Duolingo as text or CSV — the course credits the matches and does not teach them again.
- Streak days transfer once. In your first week after switching, the streak starts at their count; after that only our days count, and rewards and leagues restart from zero.
Where Duolingo is stronger
Duolingo’s Catalan is built around the streak: short lessons, reminders, the daily loop — as a habit machine it works, and keeping going past the first month genuinely needs one. Our difference is elsewhere: grammar explained in plain words and a certificate path for people who need the document for life in Catalonia.
Our course: Catalan
3960 words by topic, a phrasebook with dialogues, grammar in plain words and texts to read — from the alphabet up to B1.
The hours to a level follow Cambridge's guide, the same one as the How long does Catalan take page: usually 180–200 hours of study to A2, 350–400 to B1.
Frequently asked
Is Catalan in Duolingo?
Yes, but not from your own language: as of September 18, 2026, Duolingo teaches Catalan from Spanish only — there is no course in it from English. We have Catalan in full: 3960 words, with audio, a phrasebook and grammar in plain words.
Which exams certify a Catalan level?
Officially, Catalan levels are certified by: Certificats de català (DGPL) (A1–C2) and Certificados CPNL (A1–C2). Each body publishes its own mapping between its certificates and levels; the links are in the sources block under the table.
DGPL certificate or CPNL certificate — which one?
DGPL issues the official certificates of Catalonia by exam; CPNL issues course-completion certificates of the language-normalisation consortium. Their own page states the CPNL certificates are equivalent to the official ones and map to A1–C2 — both count for official purposes, and the DGPL exam can be sat without a course.
