Learning Greek with Duolingo?
Duolingo teaches Greek from English, so the course is there for you from the first lesson. Duolingo builds its courses on CEFR but does not publish a ceiling for the Greek course; Greek has official certification from A1 to C2. Below: the level table, the exams, and how to switch without starting from lesson 1.
From Duolingo sections to a level and an exam
Duolingo’s courses follow CEFR ([their own explanation](https://blog.duolingo.com/duolingo-score/)), but they do not name a ceiling for the Greek course: the course list opens inside the app, and there is no statement about its level. Your current level is the Duolingo Score; their Score ↔ CEFR table is the first column ([the table](https://blog.duolingo.com/duolingo-score/)).
| Duolingo Score | CEFR | Exam | Our level |

How to switch without starting from lesson 1
Already learning Greek on Duolingo? Do not start from the alphabet: the app asks you in the course's own words and lands you exactly where you belong. The level row below opens Greek right away — the language is already chosen.
- A check of where to start. Three questions per band, two failed bands — and the check is over. It asks in the words of the course itself, not by self-assessment.
- Words can come along. Export your list from Duolingo as text or CSV — the course credits the matches and does not teach them again.
- Streak days transfer once. In your first week after switching, the streak starts at their count; after that only our days count, and rewards and leagues restart from zero.
Where Duolingo is stronger
Where Duolingo is strong, it is strong by design: the Greek course runs from English and has been polished by years of short-lesson mechanics, streaks and reminders — as a habit trainer it works, and it is what keeps people past the first month. Our side is different: the script from week one, and a B1 target with the Cambridge hours.
Our course: Greek
4008 words by topic, a phrasebook with dialogues, grammar in plain words and texts to read — from the alphabet up to B1.
The hours to a level follow Cambridge's guide, the same one as the How long does Greek take page: usually 180–200 hours of study to A2, 350–400 to B1.
Frequently asked
Is Greek in Duolingo?
Yes. The difference is not whether the course exists but what is inside it: how many words, whether each has audio, whether the script is taught from zero. We have Greek in full: 4008 words, with audio, the script explained, a phrasebook and grammar in plain words.
Which exams certify a Greek level?
Officially, Greek levels are certified by: Πιστοποίηση Ελληνομάθειας (elinomáthias) (A1–C2 (Α1–Γ2)). Each body publishes its own mapping between its certificates and levels; the links are in the sources block under the table.
What are Γ1 and Γ2?
The top tiers of the Πιστοποίηση Ελληνομάθειας (elinomáthias) certificate: Γ1 is “very good knowledge” (CEFR C1) and Γ2 is “excellent” (C2). The Centre for the Greek Language runs six levels — Α1, Α2, Β1, Β2, Γ1, Γ2 — with separate exams for children and for teens and adults.
